(October 29, 2019) White Plains, NY – As the Getty fire climbs the canyons in Los Angeles, evacuations are underway and residents are tuning in to local radio for live updates and information about evacuations.
The fire “broke out shortly after 1:30 a.m. Monday along the 405 Freeway near the Getty Center and spread to the south and west, rapidly burning more than 600 acres and sending thousands of people fleeing from their homes in the dark,” reported the Los Angeles Times. “About 600 DWP customers in the Getty fire area remain without power on Tuesday.”
Media Monitors analyzed changes in PPM listening for Los Angeles on October 29, 2019, using our new breakthrough programming tool, Audio Overnights.
Local stations KFI-AM, KEIB-AM and KNX-AM aired news stories and interviewed local officials as well as reviewed evacuation instructions. Compared to the same day the week prior, all stations saw significant increases in key demographics.
This is a perfect example of how radio leverages its unique local relevance and wide reach to engage the community in case of adversity or life-threatening events.
